.imgPTN files were originally devised so that E2B could support UEFI booting (linux, konboot, etc. as well as Windows) without any complicated menu/bcd editing.
I haven't used WinNTSetup much, but of course you can use it with E2B. WinNTSetup seems to need an install.wim file which means it must be extracted from the ISO first. It also has problems with encrypted .esd files.
As regards XP, can you install a vanilla MS XP Install ISO to an AHCI system with WinNTSetup without expert knowledge and having the right drivers on hand? You can do this easily with WinSetupFromUSB and E2B.
I will have to take a closer look at it some time though, especially as it can be scripted and thus automated.
